The Department of General and Visceral Surgery, under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Marco Niedergethmann, is dedicated to all aspects of modern surgery in Rüttenscheid and Steele – from standard basic care through to minimally invasive and complex oncological surgery.
The team of experienced general and visceral surgeons of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery covers the entire range of diagnosis and first-rate modern general and visceral surgery of diseases of the abdominal cavity (the entire gastrointestinal tract, liver, the gall bladder, pancreas gland, spleen, peritoneum), endocrine organs (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands), abdominal wall hernias (inguinal and abdominal wall hernias) plus soft tissues of the body. Treatment is always performed in close collaboration with the referring general practitioners and specialists, the other departments of the Alfried Krupp Hospital and cooperation partners in other clinics and medical facilities.
The Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen focuses on, among others, the malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum). The Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen is certified as the Center for Intestinal Cancer (in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001) and the Competence Center for Coloproctology (German Society for General and Visceral Surgery). In addition, the department is renowned as the Competence Center for Obesity and metabolic Surgery (German Society for General and Visceral Surgery). The department offers morbidly obese patients various options of surgical treatment of obesity as well as detailed consultation, support and aftercare. Since beginning of 2016, the department is certified as the competence center for surgical diseases of the pancreas.
The Department of General and Visceral Surgery, together with the Departments of Urology, Gynaecology, Neurology, Radiology and Internal Medicine, forms the certified center for Pelvic Health and Urinary Incontinence in Essen (Ruhr), which is devoted to diagnosis and treatment of diseases for the base of the pelvis.
The Department of General and Visceral Surgery is on the FOCUS-list of “Top 100 hospitals”. The chief physician, Prof. Dr. med. Marco Niedergethmann, will also be recommended in the famous FOCUS-list of doctors this year.

Accommodation in hospital
The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.
Meals and Menus
The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.

Your companion may stay with you in your room or at a hotel of your choice during the fixed program.
