About the department

The Department of Orthopedics, Orthopedic Surgery, Spinal Surgery and Sports Traumatology at the ATOS Clinic Munich offers the full range of medical services in these focuses. The competent team of the department provides high-quality diagnostics and treatment of foot, ankle, elbow, shoulder, knee and hip diseases. Also, the department specializes in the treatment of spinal diseases and sports traumatology. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Mark Tauber, who was recognized as the best doctor specializing in elbow and shoulder surgery, according to the FOCUS magazine rating of top German doctors of 2017.

The department provides treatment for the whole range of foot and ankle diseases. Most often, patients seek medical help from the department in case of pathologies, such as Pes cavus (hollow foot), flat feet, flat valgus foot, sports injuries of the foot and ankle, ankle arthrosis, transverse platypodia, hammer toe, plantar fasciitis, Hallux rigidus, Hallux valgus, etc.

There are used various treatments for the above pathologies, starting from conservative therapy, minimally invasive interventions and ending up with open operations.

Also, the department diagnoses and treats complaints related to hip pain. The most common clinical pictures are hip arthrosis (so-called coxarthrosis), hip impingement syndrome, hip dysplasia, femoral head necrosis, trochanteric bursitis, dysplastic coxarthrosis and femoral neck fracture.

All these pathologies cause severe pain, lead to problems with mobility, and therefore require professional treatment. In most cases, to treat hip diseases, doctors perform total hip replacement, in which the implant replaces both the damaged articular surface of the acetabulum and the worn femoral head. Also, the department performs hip replacement surgery by means of AMIS technique. A great advantage of this technique is the availability of muscles, which helps to preserve them. AMIS technique makes the intervention more sparing, which facilitates the rapid restoration of mobility and rapid rehabilitation.

The department offers a large number of arthroscopic interventions on the hip joint (keyhole surgery). In most cases, these interventions are used to treat hip impingement syndrome. In addition, arthroscopic interventions are an effective method for treating damages of the articular lip, hip joint cartilage, intra-articular loose body, inflammation of the joint mucous membrane and hip instability related to the problems with the joint capsule.

The department specializes in the treatment of a wide range of shoulder and elbow diseases:

Shoulder

  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Biceps tendinitis
  • Damaged biceps  tendon
  • Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Shoulder instability
  • Arthrosis of the shoulder joint
  • Shoulder fractures
  • Plica syndrome
  • Instability of the medial or lateral ligament of the shoulder
  • And many other diseases

Elbow

  • Golfer's elbow
  • Tennis elbow
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Elbow stiffness
  • Intra-articular loose body
  • Plica syndrome
  • Distal biceps tendon rupture
  • Fracture of elbow bones
  • Acute and chronic instability of the medial and lateral ligaments
  • And many other diseases

The doctors of the department have in their arsenal many different treatment methods in this focus. In severe shoulder injuries, the patient is prescribed total shoulder arthroplasty. Depending on the diagnosis, a wide range of endoprostheses can be offered, namely an anatomical prosthesis with and without a stem, a prosthesis for partial arthroscopy of the joint surface, an anatomical prosthesis to replace the acetabulum and an endoprosthesis for total shoulder replacement.

The range of services of the department also includes the diagnostics and treatment of all knee and knee joint pathologies. The doctors of the department, who have an additional specialization in this medical field, provide patients with an accurate diagnosis, based on which the optimal treatment option is selected to achieve the best possible recovery of the patient. Depending on the stage and severity of the disease, both conservative and surgical treatment can be prescribed. The medical team of the department always tries to solve the problem with the help of conservative methods and only when they are ineffective offers the patient a surgery.

In the field of spinal surgery, all conventional and modern surgical interventions are offered. A large number of operations are performed by a minimally invasive technique.

Among other things, the department specializes in sports traumatology and offers all modern treatment methods that provide the fastest possible recovery of the patient. The specialists of the department provide their medical services to many professional sports teams, for example, the German Football Association (DFB), Munich 1860 (sports club), FC Bavaria (basketball team), the German Ski Association (DSV), etc.

It should be noted that the medical team of the department consists of experienced and highly professional specialists in the relevant medical fields. Many of them are included in the rating of the top German doctors in the FOCUS magazine. The doctors  of the department have significant achievements and enjoy an excellent reputation not only in Germany, but also far beyond its borders.
