About the department
Overweight is a problem that requires medical attention. At our clinic those patients that can be helped may benefit from an interdisciplinary approach to the problem. Such approach includes consultations of the mental specialist, pneumologist, gastroenterologist, therapeutist, medical consultations as well as advice from the nutritionist. If necessary, this list can also be supplemented with gynecologist and endocrinologist consultations. In addition, in order to obtain optimum results the patient also takes a certain course of training. A decision on further therapeutic measures is taken as a result of the multidisciplinary team meeting. Medical treatment may be prescribed in the form of surgery or conservative treatment with diet and lifestyle changes. While staying at Leukerbad rehabilitation center, the patient is treated in accordance with the individually developed program, which includes, among other things, a system of diet and physical exercises. SMOB quality criteria provide the regular follow-up after surgery for at least 5 years. Within the next first year after the surgery, the patient is examined at least once a quarter, and then - once a year. This obesity treatment proposal concerns all patients that would like to solve this problem with the help of experts and, if necessary, to receive surgical treatment.
Conditions for such surgical operations as well as quality requirements for the groups of patients approved for surgeries are specified in the Regulation for Medical Attendance (KLV) and instructions from the Swiss Study Group for Morbid Obesity and metabolic disorders (SMOB). At some stage, overweight may turn into a disease that not only degrades the quality of life, but is a real threat to human health. In such cases, surgical treatment is the only method that can save patient's life. Clinique de Valère is recognized as a major center for performing surgeries of such type.
