Department of Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology at the Hannover Medical School offers diagnosis, conservative and microsurgical treatment of eye diseases as well as ophthalmological emergency situations. Annually, the Department treats more than 2,900 inpatients and 20,000 outpatients. Around 3,800 ophthalmological surgeries are performed in two main and one outpatient operating theatres.
Department of Otolaryngology
The Department of Otolaryngology at the Hannover Medical School has a special expertise in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the area of ear, nose and throat medicine. The Department primarily specializes in the following clinical pictures: acoustic neurinoma, allergies, cold, facial inflammations, small salivary glands, midfacial fractures, nose/paranasal sinuses and sleep disturbances. Another important field encompasses oncological diseases which are treated within the framework of the Center for Head and Neck Tumors.
Department of General, Abdominal and Transplant Surgery
The Department of Surgery at the Hannover Medical School offers comprehensive surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the entire abdominal cavity. The focuses of the Department are on surgical treatment of the pancreas, stomach, liver, biliary tract/gall bladder, small intestine and colon, laparoscopic, endocrine and hernia surgery, multivisceral resection, peritonectomy as well as transplantation medicine.
Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery
The Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at the Hannover Medical School is famous for being one of the leading medical facilities in the world. The Department offers operative treatment of heart, heart valve diseases and congenital malformations, blood vessels and arteries, thoracic organs. Special attention is given to implantation of pacemakers and cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) as well as cardiac support systems. Another priority is transplantation medicine.
Department of Orthopedics
The Department of Orthopedics at the Hannover Medical School (based on the Annastift foundation) ranks among the largest and most prestigious orthopedic centers in Germany. It offers high-quality medical services in the following fields: spinal column surgery, endoprosthetics, correction of malformations, hip, knee and shoulder surgery, foot orthopedics, pediatric and neuroorthopedics. Annually, more than 40,000 patients are treated in the Department, more than 6,000 of which – on an inpatient basis.

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery
The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, Aesthetic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Hannover Medical School offers the full range of modern plastic surgery including surgical treatment of burns. For treatment of posttraumatic and postsurgical complications as well as chronic degenerative diseases and congenital malformations all modern plastic reconstructive surgery means are deployed.
Department of Trauma Surgery
The Department of Trauma Surgery at the Hannover Medical School offers a broad range of services: from medical care of patients with simple injuries – up to care of patients with complicated multiple trauma injuries and corrective operations. A special focus is put on treatment of oncological diseases of bones and soft tissues. Every year, more than 200 surgeries are performed in this field.
Department of Urology and Urological Oncology
The Department of Urology and Urologic Oncology at the Hannover Medical School encompasses the entire range of modern urology with a special focus on treatment of oncological diseases of the urogenital system. Comprehensive treatment plans are considered and developed on the regular interdisciplinary uro-oncological boards. A special focus is on the Prostate Cancer Center.

The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at the Hannover Medical School offers treatment of bowel and liver diseases, diseases of the endocrine system, metabolic disorders and diabetes at the highest medicine level. Special focus is given to gastroenterological oncology, which treats tumors of the esophagus, stomach and intestines, neuroendocrine tumors, tumors of liver and bile ducts.
Department of Hematology, Hemostaseology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation
The Department of Hematology, Hemostasiology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the Hannover Medical School specializes in diagnosis and treatment of the entire range of malignant tumors, benign hematological diseases and blood coagulation disorders. In a close cooperation with pediatric oncology, the Department constitutes the largest in the region Center for Spinal Cord and Stem Cell Transplantation.
Department of Cardiology and Angiology
The Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the Hannover Medical School specializes in treatment of acute myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure, arteriosclerosis and cardiac arrhythmias. An interdisciplinary focus is on cardiomyopathy in pregnancy, especially on the peripartum cardiomyopathy.
Department of Pulmonology
The Department of Pulmonology at the Hannover Medical School offers treatment of acute and chronic diseases of lungs and airways. The Department specializes in all types of interstitial diseases of lungs and pulmonary fibrosis and is famous for being one of the best centers for lung transplantation in the world.

Department of Neurosurgery
In the Department of Neurosurgery at the Hannover Medical School complex treatment of nervous system diseases is performed by using the most advanced microneurosurgical, endoscopic, stereotactic and interventional treatment methods. Focuses in the Department are on functional neurosurgery, surgery of skull base and spinal column, pediatric neurosurgery, craniocerebral traumatology as well as pain surgery.
Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology at Hannover Medical School encompasses the full range of treatment of acute and chronic neurological diseases on both outpatient and inpatient basis. Particular emphasis is given to treatment of patients with cerebrovascular diseases, lateral amyotrophic sclerosis and muscle diseases, neuroimmunological diseases, movement disorders and neurological complications after organ transplantation or HCV encephalopathy.
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Hannover Medical School encompasses all specialties of treatment, education and research in the field of maxillofacial surgery. The range of services contains the up-to-date technologies of the dental surgery, especially all techniques and methods associated with replacement of lost bone substance of the jaw and preparatory measures for the dental implantology.
Department of Gynecology, Mammology and Obstetrics
The Department of Gynecology, Mammology and Obstetrics at the Hannover Medical School offers the maximum range of services in the field of gynecology and obstetrics. Main areas are the following: gynecological cancer, gynecological dysplasia unit, operative gynecology, reconstructive microsurgery, obstetrics, family-friendly maternity clinic. The diseases of mammary glands are treated within the certified of the Mammology Center.
Department of Dermatology, Allergology and Venereology
The Department of Dermatology, Allergology and Venereology at the Hannover Medical School is one of the biggest centers of this kind in Germany. Main clinical areas of the Department are inflammatory skin diseases (immune dermatology), allergies of skin and mucosa as well as dermato-oncology. Annually, more than 2,800 inpatients and 17,000 outpatients are treated here.
MUH breast center is the central institution for diagnostics and treatment of breast diseases. A particular attention is paid to breast cancer. We offer the concept of holistic care to women, as well as men with breast cancer. Our high professional competence is tested and certified by independent experts according to the evaluation criteria of the German Society of Cancers, German Society for Senology (breast disease) and in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001.
Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Within the framework of the activities of the Certified Cancer Center at the Department of Oncology and Hematology the treatment of cancer and diseases of the hematopoietic system using the most modern treatment methods is introduced. The examinations in the field of tumor immunology are carried out and new therapy methods in clinical trials are provided here at the Department.
