About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery at the Hospital Neuwerk “Maria von den Aposteln” under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Frank A. Granderath has 55 beds and is the Center of Competence in the field of minimally invasive surgery, which was distinguished by the German Society for General and Abdominal Surgery (DGAV).

The main focuses of the Department of General and Abdominal  Surgery at the Hospital Neuwerk “Maria von den Aposteln” are:

General surgery

Within the framework of general surgery there are provided operations of inguinal, umbilical and postoperative (ventral) hernias as well as operations on soft tissues, thyroid and removal of bladder.

Abdominal / cancer surgery

Abdominal surgery (surgical treatment of internals, especially abdominal cavity) specializes in cancer surgery (surgery of malignancies). The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery offers the full range of cancer abdominal surgery (abdominal tumor surgery). The focus is on the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors (of the esophagus, stomach, small, large intestine, rectum) as well as on the tumors of pancreas and liver. The surgery is performed at the highest possible level with the use of the most advanced methods. The interdisciplinary councils serve as an essential component of the optimal treatment corresponding to all current recommendations. There are developed treatment and follow-up programs, which are individual for every patient. This responsible work is carried out by an interdisciplinary team of the Hospital Neuwerk “Maria von den Aposteln” under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Frank A. Granderath within the regular oncology conferences. The team consists of doctors from various fields: internists, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists and surgeons.

Minimally invasive surgery

General and abdominal surgery mostly involves a minimally invasive method. In this case surgery is performed not through a big incision of the abdomen, but with the use of small operating probes, which are inserted together with a camera via a small hole. To implement this approach, the Department is equipped with the cutting-edge equipment and with a special operating room having high resolution cameras. First of all, the advantages of minimally invasive surgery are alleviation of pains after the surgery, speed recovery and shorter hospital stay. The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery provides surgery to remove gallbladder, operations on inguinal, umbilical and postoperative hernias almost always minimally invasively. Due to a special experience, the Department also provides minimally invasive surgery of the esophagus, stomach, liver, spleen and adrenal gland. In some cases, it is possible to perform such a kind of surgery for colon and rectal malignancies. Moreover, there is offered one more method, when the operation is carried out exclusively via the umbilical incision. Since 2008 this method has been mostly used for gallbladder surgery.

Abdominal surgery

Abdominal surgery focuses on diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins. The Department has all necessary diagnostic capabilities for this purpose. Surgery is performed in accordance with the current stage of the disease, and whenever possible, minimally invasively.

Coloproctology

Colorectal surgery treats all benign and malignant diseases of colon and rectum. These mostly include bowel inflammations (Crone’s disease, ulcerous colitis, esophageal diverticulum) as well as colon and rectal malignancies (the so called colorectal cancer). Furthermore, there are provided all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the treatment of hemorrhoids, fistulas and other rectal and anal diseases. The Department of General and Abdominal Surgery at the Hospital Neuwerk “Maria von den Aposteln” under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Frank A. Granderath uses advanced surgery techniques, for example, complex operations of pelvic floor are usually performed minimally invasively (laparoscopically).

Endocrine surgery

Endocrine surgery (surgery of glands) mostly treats benign and malignant diseases of thyroid and parathyroid glands. Usually these operations are carried out with the use of neuromonitoring for the safety of nerves of the vocal cords. Neuromonitoring is a method of nerve identification. The chances to get the nerve tracts damaged during the surgery are considerably reduced. Other objectives of endocrine surgery include surgical treatment of adrenal glands and pancreas. The operation of the pancreas is mostly minimally invasive.

Heartburn at reflux disease

The Center of Competence in the field of reflux disease of the Department of General and Abdominal Surgery under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Frank A. Granderath specializes in diagnosis and treatment of the so called gastroesophageal reflux disease. In case of this disease an aggressive gastric content goes back to the esophagus (“reflux”). A typical and distressful symptom is a very painful heartburn. The Center of Competence is also focused on other esophageal and stomach diseases. The functional laboratory, which is specially equipped for esophageal diagnosis, uses the most advanced diagnostic methods. Special examination methods provide clarification of reflux disease in accordance with the latest scientific achievements.
