About the Department of General Surgery at Klinik im Park Zurich

Minimally invasive surgery procedures are also used for thyroid diseases, parathyroid and adrenal glands disorders. Thyroid plays a huge role in the process of metabolism. In case of any thyroid diseases (hyperfunction, hypofunction or a suspected tumor), cure is possible with the help of surgery procedures. Parathyroid glands (in most cases, four thereof) are located on the left and right around the thyroid and ensure balanced content of calcium in the blood by producing the so-called parathyroid hormone. Thyroid diseases (for example, hyperfunction, often in case of renal failure) cause elimination of a significant amount of calcium from the bones, which later leads to bone softening, accompanied by pain and frequent fractures. The adrenal glands are located almost above the kidneys and produce hormones for many important bodily functions (e.g., epinephrine, mineralocorticoid, cortisone, and sex hormones). Surgery procedures for thyroid or adrenal glands can be necessary if these hormones are produced in very large numbers, often because of the presence of tumors or metastases or other tumors. In case of production of adrenaline, the patient is subject to prior treatment with inhibitors (alpha and beta blockers) to prevent too strong stress reactions during surgery procedures because of the sudden release of adrenaline from the tumor. Sometimes these tumors can remain dormant, i.e. they do not produce currently known hormones.
