About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of Neurology at the Klinikum Nürnberg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Frank Erbguth deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of brain, spinal cord, the vegetative and peripheral nerves, in particular, with the inflammatory and infectious diseases, strokes, brain tumors, degenerative diseases in the brain and the central nervous system, movement disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease or dystonia) as well as with seizure disorders and neurological intensive medicine.

The Department of Neurology has 94 neurological acute care beds. This accounts for 2 neurologic general wards with 30 beds as well as a certified supra-regional Stroke Unit, which is equipped with 20 beds and another 14 monitored stroke beds. In addition, up to 10 neurological intensive care beds are available on the conservative intensive care station, which are used in an interdisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Cardiology.

A focal point of the Department of Neurology is cancer therapy. Within the framework of the Continence Center the Department of Neurology cooperates with General Surgery, Gynecology, Geriatrics, Physical and Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine as well as Urology. The department treats 50 patients with tumor diagnoses annually. These include more frequent tumors, such as primary brain tumors and metastases, but also rare tumors, such as paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes in case of tumors of different organs. Innovative procedures, such as intrathecal chemotherapy (i.e. the insertion of medication in the liquor space), are employed in the process of treatment. The physicians of the department regularly participate in neurooncological tumor boards for brain tumors. The Department of Neurology at the Klinikum Nürnberg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Frank Erbguth is a well-established Stroke Center within the Stroke Care Network using Telemedicine in Northern Bavaria (“STENO”).
