Wissenschaftliche Laufbahn und Forschungsgebiete
Prof. Hemmer (*1963) ist seit 2007 Direktor der Klinik für Neurologie am TUM-Klinikum rechts der Isar. Er ist Spezialist auf dem Gebiet der Neuroimmunologie. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit liegt auf der Erforschung von B-Zellen und T-Zellen bei entzündlichen Erkrankungen des Zentralen Nervensystems, insbesondere der Multiplen Sklerose (MS). Darüber hinaus untersucht er genetische Faktoren, die für die Entstehung und die Therapie der MS relevant sind.
Nach dem Studium der Humanmedizin promovierte Prof. Hemmer 1991 an der Universität Freiburg. Ein DFG-Stipenium führte ihn 1995 an die National Institutes of Health in Bethesda,  USA. Seine Facharztausbildung erhielt er an den Universitätskliniken in Freiburg und Marburg. Als Oberarzt war er in Marburg und als stellvertretender Klinikdirektor in Düsseldorf tätig. Seit 2007 ist Prof. Hemmer Ordinarius für Neurologie an der TUM. Er ist stellvertretender Sprecher des Krankheitsorientierten Kompetenznetzes für Multiple Sklerose und sitzt im Vorstand des Ärztlichen Beirats der Deutschen Multiplen Sklerose Gesellschaft.

The range of health services offered by the Department of Neurology at the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar covers the entire spectrum of neurological diseases. In a friendly atmosphere, the modern Department of Neurology combines superior medical expertise with the highest standard of technical equipment. The chief physician of the Department of Neurology at the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar is Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hemmer.

The Department of Neurology, together with the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology, is located within the newly built “Neuro-Kopf-Zentrum”. Close collaboration between the departments enables immediate decisions ultimately providing the best possible management of complex neurological diseases. Besides the traditional emphasis on movement disorders, pain, neurovascular and neuromuscular diseases, additional fields of interest in oncological, infectious and autoimmune disorders of the nervous system have been also developed.

All modern methods for neurological diagnosis are available at the Department of Neurology under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Hemmer. These include, in particular, specific laboratory tests as well as electrophysiological and sonographic evaluation.
