KTM Schneider

Specialized in: obstetrics, neonatology

An experienced team of physicians at the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatal Medicine at the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar accompanies pregnant women, before, during and after birth. The chief physician of the Department is Univ.-Prof. Dr. KTM Schneider. A committed team of experienced obstetricians and neonatologists is ready to help women around the clock. Midwives are very important contacts for pregnant women and their accompanying persons and aim to support them reliably and competently until the baby is born. Physicians from other areas, if necessary, can be also involved in the treatment. In case of possible risk, mother and child are therefore provided with the most effective and comprehensive care. The expert team of doctors at the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatal Medicine under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. KTM Schneider provides pregnant women with detailed information and personal advice on all issues relating to birth. Women can receive all necessary information during special consultation hours on such subjects as e.g. prenatal diagnostics. If they wish, women can also be provided with a psychological support. If a caesarean section must be performed, a modern operating theatre in the direct proximity of the delivery room is available. Besides that, a intensive care unit for premature babies is located next to the maternal child unit.

The diagnostic and therapeutic specialties

A particular focus in the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatal Medicine at the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar, headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. KTM Schneider, is on high-risk pregnant women and high-risk births. The cooperation between different specialists is needed to detect and control these risks at a early stage. For this purpose the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar established an interdisciplinary Center for Mother and Child at the Center for Perinatal Care of the Klinikum rechts der Isar. In addition to the inpatient treatment, a unit with aftercare for harlequin infants has become firmly established as a care program for premature and risk infants.

Great importance is also placed on the early detection of complications. Diagnosis is performed with the help of high-resolution sonography, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, umbilical cord puncture and biochemical analyses. It allows to rule out early deformities of the skeleton, heart defects and chromosomal anomalies. It is possible to recognize and treat complications accordingly by using computer-supported recording of the heart rate of the child and the pregnant mother’s contractions (CTG-analysis).

The department are experts when performing a Caesarean section using the less invasive Misgav-Ladach method under a spinal anesthetic, the total closure of mouth of the uterus, in case of a high risk of the premature birth, as well as in the version from the breech-position into skull-position.

The diagnosis and therapy is performed according to the internationally recognised criteria of the "Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), to guidelines of DEGUM II/III and to the guidelines drawn up at the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatal Medicine. Another central task of the center lies in proving the improvement of quality through an interdisciplinary cooperation. The data of the Bavarian Permanent Working Party for Quality Assurance (BAQ) show the high quality level of the Center for Mother and Child at the Klinikum rechts der Isar.
