The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Aachen has been headed by Univ.- Prof. Dr. med. Hans Clusmann since 2010. The priority areas of its activities are operations for brain tumors, skull base tumors, vascular processes as well as spinal neurosurgery, minimally invasive decompression, vertebral replacement and complex corrective operations by means of fusion or dynamic methods. Treatment of neurovascular diseases is the focus of the Department and is coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Neurovascular Center Aachen (INZA). The neurosurgical treatment of tumors and aftercare of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Aachen are integrated into the ECCA.  The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.- Prof. Dr. med. Hans Clusmann is the only one main Department of Neurosurgery in Aachen, which also provides neurosurgical treatment for the injured in trauma network in the Euregio Aachen. To reduce the side effects, operations involve highly-developed technical methods and are carried out with modern microscopes, such as neuronavigation systems, intraoperative monitoring methods and up to the surgery without anesthesia and fluorescence-guided surgical procedures as well as minimally invasive surgical techniques in head and spinal surgery.

The Department of Neurosurgery under the direction of Univ.- Prof. Dr. med. Hans Clusmann provides the entire spectrum of current neurosurgery. The experience and opportunities of a nationwide significance are characterized by the following areas:

  • Surgery of brain tumors, including skull base and pituitary tumors (especially neuronavigation, fluorescence-guided removal of tumors, intraoperative neuro-monitoring and operations without anesthesia) for gliomas, meningiomas etc.
  • Diseases of the spine in neck, chest and lower back, e.g., herniated disks, stenosis and wear of the spinal canal, pathology and dislocation of vertebrae, tumors of the spine and spinal cord
  • Vascular diseases of brain and spinal cord, such as aneurysm, angiomas, fistulae and hemorrhages etc.
  • Special pediatric neurosurgery: tumors, hydrocephalus, pathology
  • Functional neurosurgery, e.g., in the case of trigeminal neuralgia or facial spasm, i.a., a pacemaker in the case of parkinsonian disease, epileptic surgery
  • Diseases of peripheral nerves (e.g., carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome, tumors of nerves)
  • Neurotraumatology (injuries of head, brain, spine, spinal cord and nerves) and intensive neurotherapy
