About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach offers the entire spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery, including heart transplantation and the use of artificial heart systems. A special focus is on the development and the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which enable patient’s more rapid recovery after the surgery. Except all kinds of adult cardiac surgery, worthwhile emphasizing are the modern bypass surgery, cardiac valve repair surgery and the surgery to regain the normal rhythm.

In recent years the scientific and clinical engagement of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach has been increasingly focused on the problem of poorly pumping heart (terminal heart failure). This resulted in the development of an extensive program for artificial heart replacement and heart support. Furthermore, the heart transplant with the longest history in North Rhine-Westphalia completes these achievements. This success is due to a competent, highly qualified team under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach, which meets all specific requirements in the field of the latest treatment methods and operations as well.
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen has two general units with 63 beds and together with the Department of Anesthesiology it shares a specialized intensive care unit with a total of 28 beds for intensive care and artificial lung ventilation. All together annually there are performed over 1,500 operations, while 1,000 of them are on the open heart.

The range of surgical services of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach includes i.a.:
