The Department of Gastroenterology, Metabolic Disorders and Internal Intensive Medicine at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Christian Trautwein deals with the treatment of patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract including liver, gallbladder and pancreas, as well as adult patients with metabolic diseases. The Department has an intensive care unit for internal diseases, a section for endoscopy and endocrinology and diabetes.
As the intensive care unit of maximal care, the Department under the direction of Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Christian Trautwein has the most advanced equipment: hemodynamic monitoring is provided by means of the latest techniques, e.g., transpulmonary thermodilution technique, pulse counter analysis and catheter for a pulmonary artery. These techniques enable the differentiated circulation therapy.
If a patient has blood clotting disorders (especially, related to liver), then there is provided the differentiated diagnosis and treatment of blood clotting. The latest diagnostic methods, drugs and separate or complex blood clotting factors can be applied for this purpose.
In cooperation with the Department of kidney diseases and hypertension, rheumatologic and immunological diseases, the highly qualified doctors of the Department of Gastroenterology, Metabolic Disorders and Internal Intensive Medicine at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Christian Trautwein carry out all possible kinds of kidney transplants, including continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) or sustained low-efficiency daily dialysis (SLED) at any time. Moreover, there can be treated the patients with critical immunologic and rheumatologic diseases, such as vasculitides and thrombotic microangiopathies, requiring, e.g., plasmapheresis.
The other focus of the Department of Gastroenterology, Metabolic Disorders and Internal Intensive Medicine at the University Hospital Aachen is the section for diabetology (diabetes) and endocrinology (hormonal disorders), founded in 2006. The section for diabetology and endocrinology is recognized by the German Diabetes Society to be the center for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the diabetic foot syndrome.
The University Hospital Aachen is a so-called hospital of the university maximum care. With its 34 clinics, 25 institutes and five multidisciplinary units covers the University Hospital Aachen not only the entire spectrum of medicine, but also it offers a patient- oriented medical care and nursing, medical education and research of international level. In the current ranking of the magazine FOCUS took the University Hospital Aachen among 2000 hospitals in Germany with number 15 a peak position.
