The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach offers the entire spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery, including heart transplantation and the use of artificial heart systems. A special focus is on the development and the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, which enable patient’s more rapid recovery after the surgery. Except all kinds of adult cardiac surgery, worthwhile emphasizing are the modern bypass surgery, cardiac valve repair surgery and the surgery to regain the normal rhythm.
In recent years the scientific and clinical engagement of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach has been increasingly focused on the problem of poorly pumping heart (terminal heart failure). This resulted in the development of an extensive program for artificial heart replacement and heart support. Furthermore, the heart transplant with the longest history in North Rhine-Westphalia completes these achievements. This success is due to a competent, highly qualified team under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach, which meets all specific requirements in the field of the latest treatment methods and operations as well.
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen has two general units with 63 beds and together with the Department of Anesthesiology it shares a specialized intensive care unit with a total of 28 beds for intensive care and artificial lung ventilation. All together annually there are performed over 1,500 operations, while 1,000 of them are on the open heart.
The range of surgical services of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Aachen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Rüdiger Autschbach includes i.a.:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery; both conventionally and minimally invasively
- Operation on heart valves; both conventionally and minimally invasively with the replacement of heart valve and reconstructive surgery on aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves
- Closure of septal defects; both conventionally and minimally invasively
- The whole range of pediatric heart surgery
- Surgery of cardia arrhythmias, including the implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators
- Surgical therapy for heart tumors
- Use of artificial heart systems
- Heart transplant
- Lung resection; both conventionally and minimally invasively (endoscopic method)
- Chest surgery
- Aortic surgery in chest and abdomen
- Aortic surgery (e.g., stenosis, aneurysms, tumors)
- Peripheral vascular surgery (e.g., stenosis, aneurysms, thrombus formation)
- Endovascular surgery (stent implantation)
- Surgery of venous vessels (varicose veins, venous thrombosis of legs and pelvis)

Accommodation in hospital
The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.
Meals and Menus
The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.

Christian priests are available for the patients at any time. Representatives of other religions may be requested at any time.
Your companion may stay with you in your room or at a hotel of your choice during the fixed program.
