The Department of Internal Medicine I - Cardiology, Pulmonology and Intensive Care Medicine treats patients suffering from diseases that affect the heart and lungs. Patients with internal diseases can be also treated in interdisciplinary ICU.

In the field of cardiology, patients with the following diseases are primarily treated: heart failure, coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, vascular diseases, valvular heart disease, hypertension and inflammation of the pericardium.

The focus in the field of pulmonology includes not only the treatment of acute and chronic lung diseases (such as pneumonia, asthma, COPD, sarcoidosis) but also the diagnosis and treatment of lung tumors of any kind (e.g. lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma) in close collaboration with the Department of Oncology. The department has various diagnostic and therapeutic methods including lung function testing with Bodyplethysmography, diffusion measurement, blood gas analysis and allergy testing.
