Department of Trauma Surgery, Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery
The Department of Trauma Surgery, Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Christian Heiß offers both surgical and conservative treatment of the entire spectrum of trauma surgery, orthopedics and sports medicine at the highest possible level. In addition to the treatment of injuries of any severity after traffic, domestic, sports and occupational accidents, the Department also performs reconstructive procedures in the field of reconstructive surgery, for example, surgical procedures to treat soft tissue strain (injuries).
In addition to all current methods of osteosynthesis, which are used to treat bone fractures, the main focuses of the Department of Trauma Surgery, Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen in the field of surgery include the very latest techniques in arthroscopic ligament and joint reconstruction, meniscus repair, as well as surgery to replace cartilage tissue on large joints.
The cornerstone of the Department is endoprosthetic replacement of the hip, knee and ankle, as well as shoulder, elbow, wrist and finger joints with the use of the most advanced implants. In the field of hand surgery, endoprosthetic replacement is widely used to treat metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints, as well as radiocarpal joint.
Hip replacement surgery can be either cemented or cement-free. It can also be either total hip replacement (with the replacement of the joint socket) or implantation of hemi-endoprosthesis (for geriatric patients). Knee replacement surgery includes the following options: full replacement of the joint surface with or without the replacement of retropatellar joint surface (AGC Total Knee System), implantation of a “sliding” prosthesis (Oxford Phase III) for unilateral arthrosis. All these can be implanted through small oblique arthrotomic incisions.
Another focus of the Department under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Christian Heiß is pediatric traumatology at the university hospital.
