About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of Abdominal, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Marburg under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Detlef K. Bartsch treats almost all surgical diseases. The spectrum includes all diseases of the internal organs and glands, lungs, abdominal wall and all vessels outside the thorax. In addition, the Department performs organ transplantations (kidney, pancreas).

Surgical oncology is among the main focuses of the Department, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Detlef K. Bartsch. The Department performs surgery for patients with malignant tumors of the entire digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, liver, bile duct and gallbladder, pancreas, small and large intestine), lungs and mediastinum between the two lobes of the lung, as well as of the endocrine glands (thyroid, adrenal and pancreas). In 2016 the specialists of the Department performed over 3,400 operations on the pancreas, while 500 of them were performed on the colon and rectum, over 150 interventions on the stomach and duodenum and over 100 procedures on the pancreas.

Many surgical procedures can be performed laparoscopically (the technique was adapted from gallbladder surgery) or this can be robotic-assisted surgery (minimally invasive surgery). The advantages of laparoscopy include not only a cosmetic aspect. After surgery patients have less pain, can restore their normal mobility quicker and rarely suffer from infrequent wound infections or ventral hernias.

The University Hospital Marburg treats the following common diseases:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Diseases of the colon and rectum
  • Familial pancreatic cancer
  • Neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Esophagus and stomach

Another focus of the Department is endocrine surgery. The Department has an excellent national and international reputation in research focused on the development and treatment of diseases of the endocrine glands. With a high treatment effectiveness and good results of surgical interventions, the Department has been certified by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery as one of four Reference Centers for Endocrine Surgery, as well as the Center of Excellence (1 of 20 in Europe) of the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS).
