The Department of Obstetrics and Prenatal Medicine at the University Hospital Bonn is represented as a supra-regional center of ultimate care (Level I Perinatal Center). A team of obstetricians, anesthesiologists and neonatologists under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Gembruch works around the clock here.  Due to a high specialization in the fields of prenatal medicine and childbirth with a high risk, the Department provides care to about 2,000 patients with a high risk and about 1,000 patients with intrauterine pathologies.

The main goal of the Department is human attitude as well as safety and protection for both parents and a child. A delivery room completes the range of provided services by an innovative individual treatment concept. The patients with a healthy pregnancy have an opportunity to be under the control of the team, consisting solely of highly qualified obstetricians, during their pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period.

The Department of Obstetrics and Prenatal Medicine together with the Department of Neonatology form the Perinatal Center (of the highest level). Neonatologists and anesthesiologists work together with the doctors of the Department around the clock. There is also maintained a close cooperation with the Departments of Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Nephrology, Gynecology and other related departments. The psychosocial counseling is always available when needed.

All methods of prenatal diagnosis and all possibilities of intrauterine treatment (umbilical cord transfusion) and even fetoscopic procedures are carried out in the Department of Obstetrics and Prenatal Medicine at the University Hospital Bonn within the cooperation with the German Center for Fetal Surgery and Minimally Invasive Therapy (DZFT).
