Armin Welz

Specialized in: general surgery, cardio surgery

The Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn offers the complete spectrum of cardiac surgery services except heart transplantation. This includes valve replacement procedures, which are based on cardiac catheter, various valve conserving surgery techniques (also minimally invasive), various methods of coronary artery bypass surgery and a wide range of aortic surgery including endovascular operations. The head of the Department is Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Armin Welz.

The Department of Cardiac Surgery has over 30 normal care beds, 6 beds in the intermediate unit and a special intensive care unit with 12 beds for intensive care and mechanical ventilation. The intensive care unit with 12 beds for artificial lung ventilation offers the full range of renal replacement therapy except for a few types of mechanical cardiac support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The Department annually performs over 1,700 operations, including approximately 1,000 operations with the use of a heart-lung machine or coronary bypass surgery on the beating heart. Furthermore, about 150 are catheter-based valve implantations, which are carried out in cooperation with partner in cardiology. Patients with congenital heart defects are treated in cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Cardiology.

The treatment focuses of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Armin Welz:
