The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. F. Bootz offers the entire spectrum of conservative therapeutic and surgical otolaryngology and surgery at a modern university level.
The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn performs an overwhelming majority of operations by means of microscopic and endoscopic equipment. In order to minimize the risk of the main nerve function disorders (auditory nerve, nerves of the vocal cords, facial nerve) and anatomic structure disorders, there are used various techniques before and during the surgery. They include, if necessary, a detailed radiological diagnosis, functional tests (nerve function examination) as well as intraoperative nervous activity monitoring. If plastic reconstruction is necessary, doctors use organism’s own material whenever possible (e.g., cartilages of ear, ribs, skin graft or musculocutaneous flap of forearm, shoulder or back).
The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn has the most advanced navigation system, which is used for the surgery of paranasal sinuses and ears. This system allows the surgeon to design a position of the instrument edge in a three dimensional patient’s head model. This model is created on the basis of CT and MRI images obtained before the surgery.
The treatment focuses of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Bonn under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. F. Bootz:
Outer ear surgery (tumors, malformations), middle ear surgery (malformations, otosclerosis, chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma)
- Surgery of nose and paranasal sinuses
Operations on the outer part of the nose (malformations, rhinoplasty, tumors), basal septum and turbinate, surgery of paranasal sinuses (chronic sinusitis and tumors of paranasal sinuses). It is also possible to use surgical navigation in this field
Surgical treatment of temporal bone (benign and malignant diseases), acoustic neuroma, chemodectoma. Surgical treatment of injuries and anterior skull base tumors
Surgical repair of hearing in case of single-and double-sided deafness in children and adults
- Surgery of the oral cavity and oropharynx
Tonsillectomy, surgery to remove benign and malignant tumors
- Larynx and pharynx surgery
Endoscopic surgery (microlaryngoscopy) of benign lesions on the local cords (polyps). Endoscopic surgery and external operations on larynx in case of malignant tumors (laryngectomy), surgery of pharyngeal pouches and pharyngeal cancer
Resection of benign and malignant tumors and metastases (neck dissection). Surgery of trachea (stenosis of the trachea) tracheostomy
- Surgery of the major salivary glands
(benign and malignant tumors, surgery to remove stones with a facial nerve monitoring during the surgery)
- Special ENT surgery in infants and children
Adenotomy, tonsillectomy, tonsillotomy, paracentesis and ear shunt, tracheoscopy for anomalies and removal of foreign bodies. Surgical treatment of ear, cochlear implants and surgery of head and neck
