The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Bonn is one of few neurosurgical centers in Germany, which offers the entire spectrum of modern neurosurgery at the highest level. Thus, the Department under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Hartmut Vatter with its annual 2,600 operations and 3,000 inpatients is one of the largest neurosurgery centers in Germany. Therefore, it has a really unique experience acquired due to the treatment of various numerous diseases.  

The main tasks of modern neurosurgery can be divided into 3 major areas: treatment of tumors of the brain and spinal cord, treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and diseases of spine. The Department at the University Hospital Bonn has 4 operating rooms, equipped with the most state-of-the-art technology, for carrying out minimally invasive surgery. Along with modern surgical microscopes and the so-called neuro navigation, the Department also uses neuro endoscopy and intraoperative MRI. The neuro intensive care unit is also equipped according to the modern technology and provides treatment of patients with severe craniocerebral traumas or cerebral hemorrhages.

Special focuses of the Department, headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Hartmut Vatter, are vascular neurosurgery, tumor, skull base and pituitary surgery, spinal surgery, epilepsy surgery as well as functional and pediatric neurosurgery. Due to these focuses the University Hospital Bonn has an excellent reputation in Germany and abroad.
