About the department

The Department of Pediatric Cardiology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin offers the full range of medical services in this field and specializes in the diagnostics and treatment of heart disease and arrhythmias in infants, young children and adolescents. An experienced and highly qualified medical team of the department deals with the treatment of congenital and acquired heart diseases. The doctors have the cutting-edge diagnostic equipment for the detection of congenital cardiac pathologies at the stage of intrauterine development. The department focuses on cardiac catheterization in newborns, as well as on the diagnostics and treatment of heart arrhythmias. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Felix Berger.

The most important structural unit of the department is the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, in which both interventional diagnostic examinations and sparing therapeutic procedures are performed. The experience of the department's pediatric cardiologists, minimization of radiation exposure and technical innovations contribute to the best possible safety and treatment effectiveness of young children. Of particular interest to laboratory workers is the examination and treatment of newborns with critical congenital heart diseases. The department specializes in balloon dilatation of all heart valves and vascular stenoses, including high-frequency therapy in pulmonary atresia and stent implantation. Also, interventional procedures are successfully performed in atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus.

The department treats about 1,500 inpatients and more than 3,000 outpatients annually. The number of patients in the department is steadily increasing, as it has excellent reputation both at the national and international level.

The service range of the department includes:

  • Catheter procedures
    • Diagnostics and treatment of newborns with life-threatening congenital heart defects
    • Balloon dilatation and stent implantation in stenoses of the heart valves and blood vessels
    • Closure of the atrial septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus using special probes
    • Treatment of patent ductus arteriosus in premature babies weighing up to 1500 g using miniature surgical systems
    • Comprehensive intervention procedures
