The BerlinProtonen – the Proton therapy at Charité under direction of Prof. Dr. Antonia Joussen specializes in the application of proton therapy in the treatment of eye tumors. Since 1998, proton therapy has been considered as a successful and highly effective method in the treatment of intraocular tumors. The systematic cooperation of medical physicists, radiation therapists and ophthalmologists has greatly improved the precision of the therapy which benefits all the patients. The innovative therapy of BerlinProtonen allows to slow down the growth of the tumor in 95% of the patients and to preserve the useful visual function of the affected eye, even those with large tumors in their eye.

The decisive advantage of proton irradiation is its use of energy directly into the effected tissues (Bragg peak) which allow an accurate irradiation of tumors as well as the protection of adjacent organs. The BerlinProtonen – Proton therapy at Charité under direction of Prof. Dr. Antonia Joussen, located at the Helmholtz Centre, in Berlin. It is equipped with a proton therapy system which can provide a proton beam with an energy output of 68 MeV. This corresponds to a penetration depth of about 30 mm into the body. This energy is ideal for the treatment of tumors in the interior of the eye. Primarily, malignant melanoma of the uvea can be irradiated, which can be further divided into choroidal melanomas, ciliary body melanomas and iris melanomas. In addition, other indications such as conjunctival melanoma, hemangioma and retinoblastoma can be treated with proton therapy.

After the completion of proton therapy, post operation therapy can also be performed on patients with large tumors to obtain or improve their eye functions.
