About the department

According to the Focus magazine, the Department of Adult and Pediatric Urology, Uro-Oncology, Specialized Urological and Robotic Surgery at the University Hospital Cologne ranks among the top German medical facilities specializing in prostate cancer treatment!

The department offers the full range of services in these medical fields. The department's doctors specialize in the treatment of various diseases of the urogenital system in patients of all age groups, including children. The department's specialists have in their arsenal many effective treatment methods that meet the very latest medical standards. The department widely uses robotic surgical techniques, which provide sparing treatment of complex urological pathologies and speedy recovery of patients. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Axel Heidenreich.

One of the department’s key activities is the treatment of oncological diseases, such as prostate cancer, bladder, kidney, testicular and penile cancers. The department's doctors provide interdisciplinary tumor boards, during which they select the optimal treatment tactics taking into account specific clinical indications. If possible, the preference is always given to sparing treatments (for example, robotic, laser surgery). Due to the availability of the ultramodern da Vinci surgical system, the department's specialists perform sparing operations even in particularly difficult cases of oncopathology. If necessary, the range is complemented by psycho-oncological care of the qualified experts.

In addition, the tasks of the department's urologists include medical care for the patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary incontinence (men, women and children), urinary tract and ureter stenosis, andrologic problems, etc.
