The Department of General Neurosurgery offers to You a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with the latest achievements of researches and technology. However, a particular attention is paid to the development of an individual treatment program for every patient. Due to the numerous research projects, the patients are provided with the top quality diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. As a part of the Neurosurgery Center at the University Hospital Cologne, due to a close neighborhood and fruitful cooperation with the Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the Department provides a comprehensive medical treatment and care. This has a favorable effect on the patient care on both inpatient and outpatient bases.

The goal of stereotactic surgery is the diagnosis of deep hotbeds of diseases as well as the treatment of movement disorders and certain forms of chronic pain (functional stereotaxy). Functional neurosurgery deals with the operations of the peripheral nervous system, i.e. beyond the brain. Spasticity and pain are also subject to the treatment. Therefore, for example, the stimulation systems can be implanted into the spinal cord or peripheral nerves.

The focuses of the Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Veerle Visser-Vandewalle, include:

  • Treatment of benign and malignant tumors
