The Department of Urology of the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. Axel Heidenreich deals with the treatment of patients with various urological diseases. In addition to general urology, our focuses include andrology, neurourology, female urology and urological oncology. In pediatric urology, which is also our focus, the Department maintains close collaboration with the Center for Pediatrics at the University Hospital Cologne.
All together 19 doctors and 36 members of medical staff take care of the patient health, providing a highly qualified medical aid and care. There is a 24/7 urologic duty service as well as an assistant service and one of the heads of the department, who is on duty out of hours. Moreover, the Department has 3 operating rooms for open, endourological, laparoscopic operations and Da Vinci operations, one OR in the outpatient surgery center and ESWL department.
The main medical focuses of the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Axel Heidenreich include diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urogenital organs in children, GreenLight laser therapy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPS), male infertility (andrology), gender reassignment, cancer of the urogenital organs, endoscopic operations.
Three interdisciplinary centers operate within the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Axel Heidenreich:
- Center for Continence and Pelvic Floor Cologne
Its treatment includes all forms of male and female urinary and faecal incontinence in the interdisciplinary cooperation with five departments: urology, gynecology, surgery, neurology, physiotherapy.
- Prostate Cancer Center
The main responsibilities of the specialists in the Prostate Cancer Center are diagnosis, counseling, treatment and aftercare for all types of malignant urological tumors.
- Prostate Centre
To optimize the treatment of prostatic diseases, the Department of Urology now forms its own network for the experience exchange together with the private urology hospitals in Frechen and Cologne as well as with the Institute of Pathology and the Department of Radiotherapy at the University Hospital cologne.

Accommodation in hospital
The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.
Meals and Menus
The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.

Christian priests are available for the patients at any time. Representatives of other religions may be requested at any time.
Your companion may stay with you in your room or at a hotel of your choice during the fixed program.
