The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Dusseldorf is one of the largest neurosurgical centers in Europe. The specialists of the Department have exerted a considerable influence on the development of modern neurosurgery: they participated in the development of current concepts in brain tumor surgery (for example, by means of a fluorescent technique), cerebrovascular surgery, spine surgery, treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, pediatric neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery. Together with the head of the Department, Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jakob Steiger, the leading physicians of the Department play an important role in medical boards of German and European professional communities.

The foundation of modern neurosurgery in Dusseldorf was laid in 1947. Today the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Dusseldorf provides surgical care to over 3,000 patients every year. Annually over 15,000 patients undergo diagnosis and treatment on the outpatient basis. Moreover, the Department receives case histories of many thousands of patients both from Germany and abroad. Mostly these requests are for a telemedicine consultation as well as numerous requests for an additional medical report. 

The specialists of the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jakob Steiger use the latest technological automated methods for the treatment of diseases of the whole neurosurgical spectrum.
