About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Clinic of Düsseldorf was founded more than half a century ago and is one of the oldest neurosurgical departments in the world. In 1947, Prof. Hans Kuhlendahl, its first director, laid the foundation for modern neurosurgery.

Today, the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Düsseldorf is a high-performance centre with up-to-date in research and technology. It covers the fields of vascular surgery, paediatric neurosurgery, skull base and pituitary surgery, spinal surgery and neuro-oncology.

When operations are required, the clinic offers modern planning and resection methods, such as neuronavigation, fluorescence-guided resection, endoscopy, intra-operative ultrasound, surgical lasers and intra-operative neuromonitoring. These methods make consistent use of the latest developments in the areas of imaging and computer techniques in order to minimize surgical invasiveness, and to carry out the operation as efficiently as possible. The same applies to neurosurgical procedures for vascular diseases of the brain. Catheter techniques have been introduced in this field ("endovascular therapy"), which are used by spezialised neuroradiologists in close cooperation with neurosurgeons.

The clinical and operative key areas of the Düsseldorf Department are the treatment of brain tumours (neurooncology), neurovascular neurosurgery, paediatric neurosurgery, skull base (including pituitary gland surgery) and spine surgery.

About hospital

Düsseldorf University Hospital is a maximum-care hospital, and as such, at Düsseldorf University, or UKD, are a byword for international top-quality service in all areas of medical care. One particular strongpoint is the integration of clinical service and research – a necessity when it comes to patient care with the best possible standards that medical science has to offer. The close integration between patient care, research and medical training in one place presents decisive advantages for our patients – you will not only benefit from modern, high-performance equipment in the individual clinics and speciality departments, but also from the latest results from medical research, right from the source.

Apart from that, our many individual clinics work together in a close network, giving you the benefit of a united source of knowledge and experience from all medical disciplines. This is how we lay the groundwork for effective treatment in the future to benefit patients with diseases that cannot currently be cured, at best relieved. We work closely with partner universities based inside and outside Germany, helping us gain new knowledge and improve our understanding of diseases, leading to new, innovative methods in diagnostics and therapy.
