The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf specializes in the treatment of diseases of the anterior eye segment, particularly, in corneal diseases. In addition to the conventional surgery, here are performed all forms of lamellar corneal transplantation. The Department of Ophthalmology enjoys an international reputation in the field of its specialization – corneal transplantation. The head of the Department is Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Gerd Geerling. The Department performs a great number of operations to transplant cornea every year and is one of the largest transplant centers of Germany. The Department has 10 years of experience in the field of corneal transplantation. Here are used sparing minimally invasive surgical techniques. 

The work in this field is so effective as the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf together with the eye bank of NRW has one of the largest and oldest eye banks in Germany as well as a relevant experience. In close cooperation with other university medical institutions, the Department of Ophthalmology gains annually more than 500 corneal transplants. In the partner center "Lions Hornbank", the donated corneas can be kept for several weeks. Thus, the patients have the opportunity of preparing themselves in peace for the operation and selecting a suitable time for the operation.

The focuses of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf are: 

  • Surgery and treatment of the anterior eye segment: Corneal transplants, cataract surgery, surgical treatment of glaucoma
  • Conservative treatment of the posterior eye segment: vitreoretinal surgery
  • Eyelids, lacrimal passages, eye sockets:
  • Plastic reconstructive operations in case of a malposition/ eyelid tumors, surgery of lacrymal passages, eye socket
  • Neuroophthalmology and strabology Orthoptics: strabismus and eye movement disorders, nystagmus, weak sight and all diseases related to it Neuroophthalmology: diagnosis of complex movement disorders and diseases of visual pathways in the patients with the main neurological diseases
