The Department of Pediatric Surgery is an independent institution at the University Hospital Erlangen providing the entire spectrum of modern pediatric surgery. The Department of Pediatric Surgery is a special one and its equipment meets all the latest requirements for the treatment of children and adolescents. To ensure the best comprehensive treatment, it is managed in cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. The chief physician of the Section is Dr. med. Manuel Besendörfer.

The principles of surgical treatment for children and adolescents differ not only due to the age, but also due to the diverse medical indications and applied methods. The treatment of diseases, detected during the prenatal development, specifics of clinical pictures in both premature and low birth-weight babies, infants and young children, pupils and adolescents in their puberty require a unique expertise and special medical qualification. The medical team of the Department of Pediatric Surgery under the direction of Dr. med. Manuel Besendörfer is proud to meet all the requirements.

For many years, the University Hospital Erlangen has been developing special surgical tools and techniques, as well as improving modern technology of preparative procedures or tissue restoration. Nowadays there are used such standard methods as an ultrasonic harmonic scalpel or laser, which minimize the surgery time and make a surgical wound quite smaller.
