With 80 approved beds and 7 operating rooms, the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Erlangen belongs to the largest academic Departments of Ophthalmology in Germany. The Department annually treats about 38,000 outpatients and 6,000 inpatients. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr. Friedrich E. Kruse. The medical care covers the full range of modern ophthalmology. Thus, the Department deals with the treatment of eye diseases of any severity. Due to a high specialization level, the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Erlangen is a supra-regional center for the treatment of the most complex clinical pictures and the most severe disease progression.        

The Department is equipped with the state-of-the-art medical and technical equipment. With innovative surgical techniques, especially in the field of corneal transplantation (endothelial keratoplasty of Descemet's membrane, automatic endothelial keratoplasty with Descemet's membrane splitting, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty), the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. Friedrich E. Kruse is a leader in the world. Through the introduction of the quality management systems, a continuous staff training as well as a tight cooperation with private practitioners and other departments of the University Hospital Erlangen, there is ensured the best treatment quality. The range of services of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Erlangen includes among others:
