The Department annually performs about 1,600 operations on heart and adjacent vessels. About 1,100 of them are open heart operations with the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass.

Department of Cardiology and Angiology (Department of Medicine II)

Department of Neurosurgery
As one of the largest clinics of neurosurgery in Germany with over 2,500 operations per year, the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Erlangen covers the whole range of neurosurgical diseases, injuries, inflammations, tumors and malformations of the brain and spinal cord and their membranes as well as spine malformations. The Department has 78 beds, including 12 beds in the intensive care unit. There are annually treated over 5,000 outpatients.
Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Erlangen ranks among the largest clinics in Germany. The Department annually treats over 3,500 inpatients and 15,000 outpatients. There is maintained a close collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery and the Section of Neuroradiology. A special Stroke Unit should be noted, since it is the largest one in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany.

Department of Thoracic Surgery
The Section of Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Erlangen offers the entire spectrum of modern thoracic surgery. The patients with lung cancer undertake an interdisciplinary treatment within the comprehensive cancer program. Another focus is a special surgical laser technique that allows to preserve tissues (lung parenchyma), e.g. upon the treatment of lung metastases.

The Section of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics at the University Hospital Erlangen covers the full range of surgical and conservative treatment options in modern trauma surgery and orthopedics. As the transregional Trauma Center of Middle Franconia, the Section receives over 240 seriously wounded patients and thus ranks among 20 largest Polytrauma Centers.
Department of Radiation Therapy
The Department of Radiation Therapy at the University Hospital Erlangen is one of the newest Centers for Radiation Therapy in Germany. The Department offers a comprehensive treatment for malignant diseases. This includes radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy, as well as supportive therapy (e.g. pain therapy and supportive nutrition). Different tumors require different therapies offered by the state-of-the-art radiation units of the Department. The spectrum also includes interventional radiation therapy and local deep hyperthermia.
Department of Nuclear Medicine
The Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital Erlangen offers the entire spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic methods in this field.
