The Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Erlangen covers the entire spectrum of neurosurgery, focusing on the microsurgical treatment of skull base processes, especially in the sellar area and in eloquent brain areas (e.g. central section of the brain, brainstem), vascular neurosurgery, as well as epilepsy surgery. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Michael Buchfelder.  

With more than 2,500 operations per year, the Department of Neurosurgery in Erlangen ranks among the largest clinics of neurosurgery in Germany. The Department has 78 beds, including 12 beds in the intensive care unit. There are annually treated over 5,000 outpatients.

Along with the usual modern microsurgical techniques, the University Hospital Erlangen uses endoscopic methods, intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring and intraoperative MRI.

The doctors of the Department of Neurosurgery under the direction ofProf. Dr. med. Michael Buchfelder have developed a new technology called vDIVA, which allows a surgeon to identify the brain areas that seem to be healthy, but in fact are already affected by cancer cells. The extent of tumor removal is critical for the treatment success. The University Hospital Erlangen was the first in the world to introduce this new technology and therefore the Department has greatly increased the accuracy and reduced the risks of treatment. 

In addition to conventional neurosurgical treatment of tumors of the brain, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral hemorrhages and intervertebral hernias, the range of services of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Erlangen also covers the following focuses:
