University Hospital Erlangen
Department of Neurosurgery
Specialized in: neurosurgery
Neurosurgical Clinic has 78 beds, including 12 beds in the intensive care unit. The number of outpatients is 5,000 annually, and the inpatient department treats about 2,200 patients and performs more than 2,200 surgeries every year. The range of surgeries covers the entire neurosurgery, focusing, in particular, on the microsurgical treatment of skull base processes, especially in the sellar region and in brain areas responsible for speech (e.g. central region, brainstem), vascular neurosurgery, as well as surgery during epilepsy.
Still, along with the usual modern microsurgical techniques, it uses endoscopic procedures, intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring and neuronavigation, as well as intraoperative MRI. Neurosurgery is always seeking balance; to cure the patients from cancer, the surgeon must remove as much tumor mass as possible, while causing as little brain tissue damage as possible. It is not so easy, because it is impossible to distinguish the malignant and healthy cells with the naked eye. Neurosurgical Clinic physicians (Director Prof. Dr. Michael Buhfelder) of Erlangen University Clinic have developed a new technology called vDIVA, which allows the operator to identify the brain areas, which seem to be healthy, but in fact are affected by individual cancer cells already. The extent of tumor removal is critical to the treatment success. Using the new method, which clinic applies the first in the world, it greatly increases the accuracy and reduces the risk.
