About the department keyboard_arrow_down

Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the University Hospital of Halle (Saale) covers all areas of maximum medical care, including the interventional cardiology (e.g. treatment of acute coronary syndrome subject to round the clock telephone support, treatment of heart valves and atrial with the use of such catheters as TAVI and Mitraclip, invasive rhythmology, including ablation, resynchronization systems) and highly specialized techniques of therapeutic intensive care (e.g. extracorporeal membrane hygiene and subcutaneous heart support systems), in particular for patients with acute and advanced heart failure, heart stroke and sepsis.

Department of Cardiology and Angiology employs 4 senior surgeons and two therapists/cardiologist, who provide the whole range of interventions for structural heart disease. All coronary interventional techniques without exception are available when required to the patients with acute myocardial infarction round the clock. A transradial access through the hand is used, when possible. Using this method, the patient can get up right after catheter check and does not lose a lot of blood at the puncture site.

The Angiology Department serves patients with all angiologic diseases, in particular, conducts the diagnostics and treatment of the following patients:

  • with obliterating atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries (showcase disease)
  • with venous thromboembolism (pulmonary venous thrombosis and embolism)
  • disease of cerebral arteries (narrowing of the carotid artery)

The following procedures or research are carried out:

  • all ultrasound studies for diagnostics of vessels, including the ultrasound using a contrast agent
  • determination of ankle-brachial index and tumor burden index
  • segmental pulse oscillography
  • transcutaneous measurement of partial oxygen pressure
  • ergometry on a treadmill
  • vein occlusion plethysmography
  • capillary microscopy
  • photoplethysmography
  • acral diagnosis in cases of suspected violation of the local circulation in fingers and toes
  • determination of thickness of the intima-media complex of the common carotid artery
  • measurement of reactive hyperemia and vasodilation of the brachial artery
  • opinion on fistulas for dialysis
  • screening for aortic aneurysm (enlargement of the abdominal aorta)

  • review of medical records
  • physical examination
