The main focuses include among others viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases and liver tumors as well as thyroid diseases and tumors. Such infectious diseases as malaria and viral diseases are researched together with the Bernhard-Nocht-Institute for Tropical Medicine. 

The Medical Department I at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf has the largest outpatient clinic for hepatitis in Germany and the only one specialized outpatient clinic for the treatment of liver autoimmune diseases. Thanks to the Center for Highly Infectious Diseases (BZHI), the Department provides a special medical care to the patients with the highly infectious life-threatening diseases. The experts of the Department have a unique experience in the use of their own mini-laparoscopic technique as well as in the intrahepatic portosystemic bypass surgery. Moreover, the Department was the first in Northern Germany to offer non-invasive liver elasticity assessment (FibroScan).
