The Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf is headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Johannes Maria Rueger, specialist in orthopedics and traumatology.  Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Johannes Maria Rueger is highly qualified in trauma surgery, general surgery, hand surgery and special trauma surgery. 

The Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf focuses on operative preservation and reconstruction of bones, organs and tissues damaged in accidents. The surgeons of the Department are highly qualified in the treatment of life-threatening multiple traumas, treatment of elderly patients, treatment of severe spine and pelvic injuries, inflammations and bone cancer. Moreover, doctors of the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf have a long experience in the treatment of injuries of knee and shoulder joints. 

The Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf has 84 beds. The emergency unit provides its services to over 25,000 patients every year. In the field of trauma surgery, the Department annually performs over 3,000 interventions on both outpatient and inpatient basis and is considered to be the Center for pelvis injuries of Northern Germany. Furthermore, the Department maintains a close cooperation with the University Cancer Center to provide surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system. 

The range of services of the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Johannes Maria Rueger includes: 

  • Pelvic surgery (pelvic injuries, fractures, hip joint arthrosis)
  • Hand surgery (palmar fibromatosis, hand injuries and fractures)
  • Knee surgery (meniscus and ligament tear, knee cartilage injuries)
  • Musculoskeletal tumor surgery (bone tumors, osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma)
