As the medical institution of maximum care, the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Manfred Westphal covers the entire spectrum of neurosurgical diseases. These include injuries, pathologies, brain and skull bone cancer as well as spinal cord and spine cancer, degenerative diseases of the intervertebral discs, spinal stenosis and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

Annually the Department treats 7,500 outpatients and provides 3,500 procedures on head and spine in adults and children.

A safety and effective treatment is ensured by minimally invasive surgery combined with the latest techniques, such as intraoperative CT- and MRI-assisted imaging with neuronavigation, ultrasound and fluorescent labeling of tumors. Over the years, the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Manfred Westphal has focused on such daily tasks as deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson’s disease, surgery of spine and brain, surgery to remove skull base tumors involving nerves and brainstem as well as treatment of complex vascular alternations.
