The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Heidelberg University Hospital ranks among the largest and oldest departments of thoracic surgery in Europe. As the Department of excellence, it was certified as the Lung Cancer Center in 2009. The chief physician of the Department is Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Hendrik Dienemann. The Department focuses on the diseases of lungs and chest organs, offers all modern diagnostic and treatment methods and performs about 2,300 operations of chest every year.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Heidelberg University Hospital includes the following units: thoracic surgery, pulmonology and artificial lung ventilation, chest tumors, anesthesia and intensive care, diagnostic and interventional cardiology. Due to the interdisciplinary and well-organized cooperation of all units, the Department of Thoracic Surgery provides a comprehensive care to the patients with lung cancer.

The Lung Cancer Center provides every patient with the most advanced diagnostic and treatment methods corresponding to the latest scientific achievements. The Department of Thoracic Surgery treats more than 800 patients with lung cancer every year. The goal of the Department of Thoracic Surgery is to develop an individual treatment concept in accordance with the current recommendations for every patient.

All benign and malignant diseases of the central respiratory tracts, lungs, mediastinum and chest wall can be treated with surgery. Mostly the following diseases are diagnosed: lung cancer, lung metastases, pleural mesothelioma as well as sarcomas, especially in childhood. Moreover, the Department of Thoracic Surgery specializes in the surgery of myasthenia, pulmonary emphysema, and chest wall pathologies (Nuss technique).

Accommodation in hospital

Patients rooms

The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.

Meals and Menus

The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.
