The Heidelber Ion-Beam Therapy Center HIT at the Heidelberg University Hospital has a treatment system for tumor diseases, which is a unique one worldwide. The director of the Center is Professor Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Jürgen Debus. This system is implemented in the center due to the use of innovative technologies. Moreover, it is represented as the first system of radiation therapy with protons and heavy ions in Europe, which was integrated into the University Hospital.

The ion-beam therapy provided in the Ion-Beam Therapy Center is used as one of methods for the interdisciplinary patient care within the framework of the National Cancer Center (NCC) Heidelberg. A team of experts under the direction of Professor Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Jürgen Debus performs unique operations with a highly accurate irradiation even of not easily accessible tumors wihtout any harm to the adjacent tissues. 

Over 1000 patients have been treated in the Ion-Beam Therapy Center as well as a number of clinical researches has been initiated since ist founding in November 2009. In October 2012 a gantry system with heavy ion and proton irradiation was put into operation.

Accommodation in hospital

Patients rooms

The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.

Meals and Menus

The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.
