The Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Jena, led by Prof. Dr. med. Utz Settmacher, as a university institution represents the general surgery, abdominal surgery, vascular surgery and care after transplantation, as well as research and teaching. Due to its great achievements in treatment of bowel cancer, the department is highly recommended in the latest FOCUS list of top German clinics.

A particular focus of the Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Jena, under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Utz Settmacher, is on the treatment of tumors. In order to ensure modern, complex treatment, there is a close cooperation with other departments of the hospital (gastroenterology, oncology, radiation therapy, radiology, pathology etc.). On the interdisciplinary tumor boards, treatment options for individual patients are discussed in detail. The treatment of patients is integrated into clinical studies so that all patients can benefit immediately from the latest scientific findings. Innovative surgical techniques all the way to organ transplantation are incorporated into the complex treatment plans. In order to facilitate a rapid recovery, the team of physicians and medical assistants, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Utz Settmacher, implement less traumatic surgical techniques (e.g. minimally invasive surgery).

The Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Jena, led by Prof. Dr. med. Utz Settmacher, performs organ transplantations of abdominal organs as single procedures or as combined procedures, i.e. multi-visceral transplantations (pancreas and kidney, liver and heart or kidney etc.). Another focus is on the transplantation of organs from living donors in order to limit the scarcity of donor organs. In order to improve the quality of life new strategies in immunosuppressive therapy and for the treatment of osteoporosis are implemented.

The treatment of vascular diseases is another focus of the Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Jena. Here, modern techniques of open and endo-vascular surgery are utilized. The department is working in cooperation with colleagues from the areas of angiology, radiology, nephrology and neurology within the framework of a vascular center.
