The Department of Internal Medicine III comprises the following specialties: nephrology, endocrinology/ metabolic diseases and rheumatology/ osteology. All three specialties form the University Consultation Center of the German state Thuringia for the clinical patient care. The Department of Internal medicine III actively participates in the scientific work, conducting epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies.

Special focal areas of the clinical work of the specialty Endocrinology/ Metabolic diseases at the Department of Internal Medicine III University Hospital Jena, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Gunter Wolf, are: impaired glucose metabolism (type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, secondary diabetes), diabetic complications, particularly diabetic foot, diseases of the endocrine system (hormone-producing glands, especially the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas and sex glands), high blood pressure (hypertension), primary and secondary form, fat (lipid) metabolism disorders, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, structured treatment programs for diabetes type 2 with and without insulin therapy, intensive insulin therapy and conventional insulin pump therapy, arterial hypertension.

The specialty Nephrology at the Department of Internal Medicine III University Hospital Jena, under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Gunter Wolf, covers the full range of highly specialized procedures associated with nephrology. These include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic kidney diseases, high blood pressure diseases and kidney dysfunction, which occur in the course of metabolic diseases (Diabetes mellitus, gout), tumors or diseases of the bone and connective tissue.

The division of rheumatology and osteology at the Department of Internal Medicine III University Hospital Jena, under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Gunter Wolf, covers the full range of highly specialized procedures for diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of inflammatory rheumatic and osteological diseases. The special emphasis is placed on collagen disorders, systemic vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative spondylitis, as well as metabolic osteopathy.

The kid rooms have everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kid bathroom includes both a toilet and a shower. All rooms offer functional beds with orthopaedic mattresses ensuring unsurpassed support for overall body during sleep. There are bedside stands with pull-out tables, lockers and safe boxes in each room. It is also possible to access the Internet from a PC, smartphone or tablet so that kids always keep in touch with their parents and other family members. There is also a TV in each room.
You can opt for a single or a double room. An accompanying person may stay with the kid in the room. A double room is shared with another patient.
The enhanced comfort rooms are equipped with a safety box, a fridge and upholstered furniture.

The patient and the accompanying person are offered a daily choice of three menus. If you are on a specific diet for any reason, you will be offered an individual menu. Please inform the medical staff about your dietary preferences prior to the treatment.
