About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery is part of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Münster. The approaches to the treatment of brain tumors in children are usually similar to those used for tumor treatment in adults. The chief physician of the Section is Dr. med. Angela Brentrup.

Nevertheless, in some cases treatments in pediatric neurosurgery differ from similar methods used for adults. For example, in order to prevent life-threatening inflammatory processes in case of spina bifida (dysraphia), the defects must be eliminated as soon as possible (if the newborn’s health condition allows to do it). The medical care of small patients (usually intensive care) is provided in a tight cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics, the Section of Neuropediatrics at the University Hospital Münster.

The severe disraphic disorders can cause brainwater (hydrocephalus). The offered treatment option is to remove cerebrospinal fluid, while an emergency involves external ventricular drainage. The long-term treatment incorporates the use of a shunt that is conducted to the right atrium or abdomen subcutaneously. The further systemic therapy of small patients after bypass surgery is provided within the outpatient counseling that is also offered by the Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery under the direction of Dr. med. Angela Brentrup at the University Hospital Münster.
