About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Center of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is a joint project of the University Hospital Münster and St. Franziskus Hospital Münster. The Center under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Giovanni Torsello ranks among the largest European innovative centers in the field of vascular surgery. Through an interdisciplinary cooperation there was founded a separate vascular center that also deals with the treatment of the most severe and rare diseases.

The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Münster annually treats 6,000 outpatients and over 3,500 inpatients. A team of experts under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Giovanni Torsello performs 3,500 operations and about 1,000 imaging examinations a year. Every patient is offered the most sparing treatment option.

The University Hospital Münster takes an active part in the development of surgical techniques. Back in 1996, the physicians of the Department completed the range of services with endoluminal catheter techniques. Due to a long use of both methods and a constant participation in the further development of treatments, the doctors can of the Department under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Giovanni Torsello can offer every patient the most appropriate treatment. Surgery and catheterization complete each other and are perfectly combined. Quite often it is possible to prevent an extensive surgery and to substitute it with minor interventions. Nevertheless, some cases require classical surgery.

The range of treatment options offered by the University Hospital Münster covers among others:

  • Thrombectomy
  • Thromboendarterectomy
  • Bypass surgery
  • Interponates (vascular jumpers)
  • Vascular transposition
  • Balloon expansion
  • Stent implantation
  • Prostheses, stent grafts
  • Hybrid interventions
