The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Tubingen was built in 1909 and since 1994 it has been rebuilt and modernized. Now it has 75 beds in four stations. Four modern operating rooms are available for eye-operations. Nearly 6,000 patients are treated in the Department of Ophthalmology on the inpatient basis every year. The medical director of the Department is Prof. Dr. med. Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt.

The priority areas of the Department are the ambulances and special ambulances. 60,000 patients are provided with the qualified medical care every year. The Department of Ophthalmology offers the whole range of diagnosis and treatment of diseases of eyes, ocular adnexals, optic nerves and visual pathways.

The highly qualified specialists of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Tubingen under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt have the most advanced diagnostic and surgical techniques and maintain an intensive multidisciplinary cooperation with other departments of the University Hospital Tubingen: Internal Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Radiation Therapy, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial Surgery.
