The range of surgical services of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Tubingen covers all surgical and interventional operations in the corresponding fields up to the transplant surgery. The medical director of the Department is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christian Schlensak.

Due to a close interaction of three fields, patients benefit greatly from a complex and intensive medical care. The Department is recommended by the FOCUS List of Specialized Clinics for Heart Surgery 2016. With the latest methods for purification of patient's own blood during surgery, the use of donated blood is minimized.

The Section of Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Tubingen offers all artery and vein operations, with a particular emphasis in the creation of artificial vascular access for blood purification (dialysis) or permanent drug therapy.

The Section of Thoracic Surgery offers (if necessary) all video-assissted minimally invasive methods varying from a simple thoracoscopy, mediastinoscopy and up to lung resection.

Treatment focuses of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital Tubingen under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Christian Schlensak include:

  • Cardiac surgery for adults (minimally invasive surgery on heart valves, artificial heart, modern bypass surgery)
  • Pediatric cardiac surgery, including complex heart defects of newborns
  • Adults with congenital heart defects (CHD)
  • Vascular surgery (surgery on the carotid artery with local anaesthesia, minimally invasive treatment of cardiac arrhythmia)
