Department of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Nutrition and Nephrology

The department provides inpatient and outpatient care for patients with benign and malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas and metabolic diseases. Besides, the clinic provides treatment to patients with general internal diseases. The department offers a full range of the most modern research methods in endoscopy, ultrasound and dialysis. Besides, we offer a full range of studies of the gastrointestinal tract functions. A particular focus is diagnostics and treatment of patients with tumors in the gastrointestinal tract.

As regards gastrointestinal oncology, the Department of Internal Medicine I is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Ulm (CCCU), holding one of 15 awards in Germany from the German Cancer Center and is a leading cancer center; besides,  CCCU as the Cancer Center is certified according to the criteria of the German Cancer Society. The main activities of the working group for gastrointestinal cancer is diagnostics and treatment of malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The main areas of nephrology section are acute and chronic kidney diseases, rheumatic diseases affecting the renal system, hypertension, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and transplantations. The section offers a variety of methods for diagnostics and treatment meeting the state of the art of research and technological development. After opening of a new modern center for dialysis and apheresis in August 2014, the treatment options for patients with kidney diseases have improved significantly. The center provides the following range of services: fixed hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, daily dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, interdisciplinary administration via vessels, apheresis for fat metabolism disorders.

According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the Department of Internal Medicine I at the University Hospital Ulm ranks among the top German departments specializing in colon cancer treatment!
