About the department

The Department of Dermatology and Allergology at the University Hospital Ulm provides the full range of medical services in the areas of its competence. The medical facility offers comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for skin diseases and allergies. The department's primary focus is on the treatment of malignant skin tumors, which is carried out in a center certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG). The department also houses a state-of-the-art Phototherapy Center, where patients with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, and other skin pathologies receive treatment. Allergic diseases are treated in a certified center of the Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network (GA2LEN). The most common allergic diseases in the clinical practice of the department's doctors are hay fever, bronchial asthma, urticaria, conjunctivitis, and drug allergies. The department's specialists use allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization) and other effective methods for the treatment of allergies. The medical facility also has an in-house laboratory. The department has 35 stationary and 14 semi-stationary beds at its disposal. Doctors use the very latest treatment methods in their work that allow them to achieve optimal therapeutic and aesthetic results. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Karin Scharffetter-Kochanek.

The priority focus for the department's dermatologists is skin cancer treatment. This type of cancer is widespread all over the world. Skin cancer is treated at a highly specialized center certified according to the requirements of the German Cancer Society (DKG). The center is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm (CCCU), thanks to which doctors can provide patients with comprehensive medical care. The department's specialists have long experience in the treatment of melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma. The main treatment method is the surgical removal of the malignant neoplasm. Skin tumors are often localized on visible parts of the body (face, neck, breast, abdomen, arms, legs, etc.), so reconstructive plastic surgery is often required after curative tumor resection. If the patient has contraindications to surgery, the department's doctors offer an alternative treatment option, radiation therapy. A surgical intervention is usually not sufficient to achieve a good result in advanced stages of skin cancer, so the department's specialists, jointly with oncologists, carry out targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy.

The department also successfully treats benign skin diseases, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, scleroderma, vitiligo, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Patients receive drug therapy with different groups of pharmaceuticals and undergo phototherapy and photodynamic therapy. Doctors use state-of-the-art devices with an automatically adjustable spectrum and intensity of ultraviolet rays for phototherapy. The department's dermatologists effectively perform photodynamic therapy for the treatment of precancerous skin conditions, such as actinic keratosis or atypical nevi.

In 2007, the department opened an Extracorporeal Photopheresis Unit. This method is successfully used to treat graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplants.

The department's team of specialists also regularly admits patients with skin diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. These include Lyme disease (borreliosis), impetigo, herpesvirus infections, fungal lesions of the foot and nails, mucous membrane diseases, and tropical dermatoses. Patients with sexually transmitted infectious diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and acute condylomas can also undergo treatment here. Individually developed drug therapy regimens are most often used for the treatment of the above-mentioned pathologies.

In the field of allergology, a special focus is on the treatment of hay fever, bronchial asthma, urticaria, and drug allergies. Symptomatic treatment is prescribed to alleviate their manifestations. The medical facility also successfully uses allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization). This therapy involves the gradual injection of increasing doses of the allergen into the patient's body to reduce sensitivity to it.
