Akif Özdamar

Specialized in: ophthalmology

The Dünyagöz Hospitals feature all fields of present-day ophthalmology. The physicians of the hospital have special expertise in the cataract surgery, laser treatment (refractive eye deficiencies such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism), vitreoretinal surgery, corneal transplantation and surgery, plastic-reconstructive surgery as well as glaucoma treatment. In addition, special attention is given to eye health of children.

Highly qualified surgeons of the Dünyagöz Hospitals Group carry out a wide range of surgeries on eyelids, orbits and the lacrimal system. Many of its physicians are well-known professors, university lecturers and medical specialists, who are regularly invited to take part in the international congresses at home and abroad and present there the self-developed treatment methods and successful results of complex eye treatments.

The lead physician of the Ataköy hospital in Istanbul Prof., Dr.med. Akif Özdamar is an internationally recognized expert. Professor Özdamar is specialized in the treatment of cataract, diseases of the cornea, keratoconus, presbyopia and the LASIK-technology. Professor Özdamar has accumulated special expertise and an experience of more than 24,000 surgeries in 20 years. Moreover, more than 50 scientific publications stem from his pen, published in numerous medical journals.

The scientific advisor of the Dünyagöz Hospitals Group is world famous professor Ioannis Pallikaris, president of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). Professor Pallikaris is the inventor of the LASIK and Epi-LASIK methods, the author of many scientific publications and has received different international academic awards and honors. Professor Pallikaris has provided scientific advice to the Dünyagöz Hospitals Group from 2003.

An important focus of the Dünyagöz Hospitals is on treatment of cataract. Cataract is an eye disorder, which is usually seen in elderly people; however, it can also occur in diabetes patients, as a result of long-term use of medicines with cortisone, as a result of physical injuries to the eye and in newborns. Cataract can only be treated with surgery. Today, cataract operations are performed with a minimally invasive, pain-free procedure without using needles or anesthesia.

At Dünyagöz Hospitals Group, cataract surgery with "Femtosecond Laser" technology is used, which reduces the risk of complications significantly and offers a reliable and comfortable treatment. The most important phase of the operation – the positioning of the artificial intraocular lens – is prepared in a perfect manner. Thus, the new technology gives patients with refractive errors besides cataract such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism the option to reduce their dependency on using glasses for near and far vision thanks to the advanced intraocular lens implantation. Highly qualified specialized physicians with a long experience of cataract surgeries perform the surgery with «Femtosecond Laser».

Another technique, which is used in the treatment of cataract, is PHACO. With this technique, entry into the patient’s eye is made through a small 2.2 mm incision. "Viscoelastic gel", a special liquid, is used during the cataract surgery. It is for single-use only and may not be used on another patient. FDA (American Food and Drug Administration)-approved foldable intraocular lenses and FDA-approved Viscot liquid (viscoelastic gel) are used at Dünyagöz Hospitals Group.

In the field of refractive surgery, modern customized laser techniques are applied in Dünyagöz Hospitals. These include:

  • iLASIK
  • Intralase LASIK
  • Intralase Topolazer
  • Intralase Presbiyopi
  • Intralase Astigmatic Keratotomy
  • LASEK Standart
  • LASEK Wavefront
  • PRK Standart
  • PRK Topolazer
  • PRK Wavefront

LASIK method (short for Laser-in-situ-Keratomileusis) is the most commonly used method around the world for refractive surgeries. It is based on the principle of opening the cornea as a flap by cutting a thin layer on the upper surface of the cornea, and the diopter correction with "excimer laser" on the exposed cornea surface. At Dünyagöz Hospitals Group, surgeries are performed by doctors specialized in the treatment of eye diseases with laser.

The iLASIK method, the most innovative laser technology, is a “No Blade” Intralase laser treatment. ILASIK is completely custom-made. Everything is performed based on the personal visional quality of the patient. The technology used in the ILASIK method has been proven as extremely secure.

Refractive surgeons of the Dünyagöz Hospitals have many years of experience and highest qualification. The optimal treatment method is chosen based on the information gained through a series of investigations and analysis. For patients whose physiological capabilities are not suitable for Intralase or iLASIK surgeries alternative appropriate treatment methods of the superficial layer of the cornea are applied. These include in particular photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). In this case, a thin layer (flap) is not created by incision in the cornea; instead, a PRK surgery involves removing the outer thin live tissue called epithelium from the cornea.

Another focus of the Dünyagöz Hospitals is the treatment of keratoconus. For this disease, Dünyagöz offers its services at the Keratoconus Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Keratoconus is a degenerative eye disease characterized with the thinning and cone-like bulging of the cornea. The physicians at the center use a variety of treatment methods such as specific contact lenses, corneal cross-linking (CCL) and intracorneal rings (Intacs) or corneal transplant.

Particular attention in the Dünyagöz Hospitals Group is paid to the pediatric eye health. FDA-approved technologies and materials are used in the monitoring and treatment of pediatric eye diseases at the Dünyagöz Hospitals. If anesthesia is required, it is administered by anesthesiologists specialized in pediatric anesthesia. All pediatric surgical procedures are performed in sterile operating rooms, on operating tables designed to fit pediatric patients and using personal, single-use medical supplies.

The range of services of the pediatric ophthalmology offered by the Dünyagöz Hospitals covers the following clinical pictures:

  • Corneal diseases in small children
  • Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
