Kidney transplantation surgeries
The Department of General Surgery at the Medicana International Istanbul Hospital has already performed more than 209 kidney transplantation surgeries with a success rate of 99,9%.
Kidney transplantation is recommended for patients with the following clinical pictures:
- End-stage renal disease
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Congenital renal anomalies
- Chronic pyelonephritis
- Heart disease
- Urological complaints
- Arterial hypertension
Kidney transplantation procedure
The kidney transplantation surgery is performed at the same time in both donor and recipient; thus, there are two surgical teams working in the operating theater. The removal of kidney and ureter is carried out in the donor. The surgeons need to carefully obtain the vascular pedicle and dissect it as close as possible to the great vessels.
At the same time, the other surgical team prepares a place for kidney implantation in recipient. For this purpose, the internal iliac artery is identified and dissected. The proximal end is preserved for anastomosis with the renal artery, while the distal end is bound up. The area of the urinary bladder where the ureter will be implanted is carefully identified. After the bandage and dissection of the vascular pedicle is completed, kidney with the ureter is removed from the donor’s body and put into a cold physiological saline. The perfusion of the kidney is carried out through the renal artery with the aid of the solution during 3-4 minutes at a temperature 4 °С. Then the kidney transplantation surgery can be started.
The kidney transplantation surgery is performed as follows: the arterial anastomosis is performed end-to-end between the renal and internal iliac artery. The renal vein is sewed with the external iliac artery in a way the anastomosis end-to-side is performed. Then kidney decapsulation is carried out. One end of the transplanted kidney is implanted into the urinary bladder. Rubber tubes are placed to the area of vessel anastomoses and to the urinary bladder. Then the wound is sutured. The continuity of the urinary tract can be restored through anastomosis of the ureters.
After the kidney transplantation
During 5-10 days after surgery, the full kidney function is regained. The patient can be discharged from the inpatient stay on the fifth day; donor can be discharged on the third day after surgery, however, by taking into account the importance of the postoperative care, the Department recommends to stay in the hospital within 15 days for both patient and donor.
Important: a required prerequisite for conducting of the kidney transplantation operation is availability of a related donor and a match of the blood groups.
Liver transplantation surgeries
Liver operations surgeries are recommended for patients with the following clinical pictures:
- Polycystic liver disease
- Acute liver disease
- Malignant liver tumors
- Viral hepatitis
- Wilson disease
- Metabolic disturbances
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Primary biliary cirrhosis
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis
Patients, who are set to receive liver transplantation treatment, need to undergo a comprehensive diagnosis, including the following procedures:
- Consultations with cardiologists, pneumologists, for women – with gynecologists
- Blood examination
A related donor is an obligatory precondition for the operation. Likewise, donor has to undergo a comprehensive diagnosis.
Liver transplantation procedure
Surgical interventions are performed by two surgical teams. The liver is removed in donor and then transplanted into the recipient. Medical brigades consist of experienced specialists in the fields of transplantation, microsurgery and radiology. The operation of liver removal from the donor lasts for 6-8 hours, while the transplantation of the liver to the recipient lasts 8-12 hours.
After the liver transplantation
After the surgery is performed, the patient is delivered to the Intensive Care Unit, then he is transferred to the specialized ward of the Transplantation Department. The restorative treatment lasts up to 2 weeks. Once the patient is released from the hospital, he or she needs to receive treatment an outpatient basis, which lasts for two months. During this period, it is also recommended to stay in Turkey to receive all required examinations, functional check ups as well as biopsies. In addition, patients are offered physical and psychological rehabilitation. As for donor, he or she is discharged from the hospital after 7 days after surgery; donor can return to the daily activities (including sports) 14 days after the surgery. It is possible to leave the country 20 days after the surgery.
The Medicana International Istanbul Hospital offers hair transplantation procedures for patients suffering from traumatic alopecia, hair loss in men, receding hairline and a general alopecia.
It should be mentioned that today hair loss surgeries are growing in popularity and belong to the most frequent operations among broad masses of population due to general reduction of the costs for this type of treatment.
In general, the Medicana International Istanbul Hospital utilizes two types of hair transplantation:
- FUT method: in this method, a tissue slice is obtained from hairy scalp located in bilateral post-auricular regions. Donor sites are sutured and the scars disappear soon. After a month, only small, not visible lines remain under hear. Approx. 6 thousand grafts (each graft contains from 1 to 4 hair roots) can be transplanted during this procedure, which lasts for 5-8 hours.
- Sutureless method FUE: in this method, hair units are individually obtained from neck region and thus, suture procedure in the conventional method is avoided. There are no traces of the surgical procedure on the neck area only 7 days after surgery. Approx. 2,5 thousand grafts can be transplanted during one procedure. However, it is possible to undergo 2-3 procedures within few days, which allows to transplant a total of 5 thousand grafts. In this method, hair grafts can be taken from all body areas.
In general, the sutureless transplantation is more preferred as it is a smoother and less invasive procedure.
The advantages of the FUE method consist in:
- This procedure is scalpel-free
- There no sutures
- There are no visible scars after surgery
- Short healing period
- Quick return to the daily life (including sports activities)
In both cases, specialists of the Medicana International Istanbul Hospital perform the operation under local anesthesia; the operation takes about 5-6 hours.
