The main focuses of urologic oncology at the University Hospital Giessen:
- Bladder cancer
- Kidney tumor
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Penile cancer
Particular attention is paid to endoscopic treatment methods. Laser therapy is mainly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder ulcers and can be combined with blood thinning therapy or provided for patients with an increased cardiovascular risk. Fluorescence guided surgical resection of the tumor is a standard treatment for bladder cancer. In addition, endoscopic laser therapy can ensure a successful treatment of urolithiasis. The Department at the University Hospital Giessen also has a state-of-the-art extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy system. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy breaks kidney and ureter stones using concentrated ultrasonic waves from the outside. The remains of the stones come out naturally, with urine.
Moreover, the Department offers a comprehensive diagnosis of infertility in males. In the field of surgical treatment of male infertility, the Department offers surgical options, including sampling of sperm from either testicle or epididymis. Microsurgical varicocelectomy is considered a standard treatment method.
Pediatric urology is also an important focus of the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Giessen.
