About the department keyboard_arrow_down

The Department of General Ophthalmology of the University Hospital Cologne in Germany under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen is one of the largest ophthalmology centers in Germany.  The Department has a long successful experience in the treatment of both anterior and posterior eye section. The main task of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Cologne is the outpatient and inpatient treatment of eye diseases of all kinds. The main activity areas of the Department include corneal, glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery. The Department uses both the most advanced equipment and the cutting-edge surgical techniques for the treatment of eye diseases.

The following advanced surgical methods are used for the treatment of eye diseases:

  • Lamellar corneal transplant surgery (DMEK, DSAEK) for Endotheldystrophien
  • Lamellar corneal transplant surgery (DALK) and corneal crosslinking treatment for keratoconus
  • Refractive laser and lens surgery: PIOL, LASIK, LASEK
  • Non-filtering glaucoma surgery: Canaloplasty and Trabectome®

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen, Managing Director of the Ophthalmology Center at the University Hospital Cologne, introduced various new surgical techniques in the field of surgical treatment of cornea. These techniques enable a more accurate and sparing replacement of the damaged corneal areas for donor material. The Department of General Ophthalmology of the University Hospital Cologne uses innovative methods of lamellar keratoplasty, at which only a part of cornea is replaced by donor material. The part incapable of functioning is replaced and the healthy part remains. Almost 400 patients underwent keratoplasty in the Ophthalmology Center in 2013, while in over 80% cases there were used the cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques. Due to these achievement, the University Hospital Cologne ranks among the leading centers in Germany and Europe.

The range of medical services at the Department of General Ophthalmology of the University Hospital Cologne in Germany, headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Claus Cursiefen, includes the following treatment options as well:

  • Corneal crosslinking
  • Excimer laser – Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK)
